According to elementary schools.org, over 51% of the Public Elementary and Middle Schools in the Greater Dunedin area have students who participate in the Free or Reduced Rate lunch program.
Summer vacation which commences May 29-August 14 increases the financial hardship on families who need to provide breakfast and lunch for their children, thus the increased demand and the Challenge.
Dunedin Cares is asking local businesses, churches, civic organizations, and individuals to participate in the Peanut Butter and Jelly Challenge so they can stock their shelves to meet this increased summer need.
The Pantry needs canned tuna, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, maple syrup.*
*Please, no bulk containers, easy-open and small sizes in plastic (rather than glass) containers preferred!
The Challenge will run from April 15 through May 15.
Q. Do you have to register your team? A. No! You can join in at any time, just make sure all your drop-offs or online donations use the same team name so we can count it towards your total!
Q. Are you able to pick it up from us? A. Occasionally we can make a pick-up trip, but our van is now being used as a mobile pantry and has limited availability. If you are unable to make other arrangements, email admin@dunedincares.org for help.
Q. What do you accept? A. Food only, please!
Q. Do we only collect the food on the poster list? A. No, we accept any food within its expiration dates. The items mentioned on the flyer are specific to kids making themselves lunch, but we also have a general Pantry wish list of our overall most needed items here.
Q. Can we give it to you as we collect it? A. Absolutely, we will just keep a running total for you!
Q. I don't have time to collect, can we just support with a financial donation? A. Of course, anyone can make an online monetary donation and put their team's name in the "notes" section of the form. each dollar counts as a pound of food.
Q. I don't have a team, can I do this alone? A. Sure! We really appreciate all the help we can get!
