Volunteer Information

DUNEDIN CARES HAS RESUMED INDOOR SHOPPING OPERATIONS, BUT WITH CHANGES AS A RESULT OF THE CURRENT COVID-19 PANDEMIC. 


FOOD DISTRIBUTION IS FROM 10:00 AM UNTIL 12 NOON ON THURSDAYS ON SATURDAYS. 


DUNEDIN CARES WILL OPERATE UNDER CDC GUIDELINES. FREQUENT CLEANING WILL BE PERFORMED DURING FOOD DISTRIBUTION HOURS AND 6 FOOT SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL  BE PRACTICED BY ALL VOLUNTEERS AND CLIENTS. ALL VOLUNTEERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR MASKS, WHICH WILL BE PROVIDED TO YOU IF NECESSARY.


Dunedin Cares welcomes any individual who would like to be involved with helping our residents in need. We appreciate you giving of your time and welcome your help.


Our volunteers do a variety of jobs at the pantry, from receiving donated food, stocking shelves to helping our clients with their shopping experience.  Volunteers must be 18 years and older.


Job Description: Parking Attendant

Arrival Time: 9:00 AM

Last Car Accepted: Noon

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Set up and take down parking lot cones and signage

2.  Set up and take down canopy and chairs

3.  Direct cars to parking for in-pantry shopping

4.  Direct cars utilizing drive-up service to appropriate location


Job Description: Greeter #1

Arrival Time: 9:15 AM

Last Client Accepted: Noon

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Greet Clients and determine if they will shop in-pantry or utilize drive thru service. 

2.  Provide Clients utilizing in-pantry shopping with a single use number to keep the order of Clients organized while waiting to enter pantry.

3.  Direct Client either to drive-thru lane or to Parking Attendant for in-pantry shopping.

4.  Enter Clients utilizing drive thru service into Food Bank Manager or manually enter on daily log for entry into Food Bank Manager at the end of the food distribution.


Job Description: Greeter #2 (Health Screener)

Arrival Time: 9:15 AM

Last Client Accepted: Noon

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Set up, maintain and take down Client number board. 

2.  Take Client temperatures once parked and ask health-screening questions to all Clients who will entry the pantry.  If any Client has a temperature at or above 100 degrees or does not clear the health screening questions, they may be offered drive thru service instead. 

3.  Advise Clients to have their valid ID or Dunedin Cares ID ready when their number is called.

4.  Keep Client flow into the pantry orderly with a maximum of 3 Clients shopping at any one time.

5.  Thoroughly sanitize thermometer, clipboard and screening questionnaire prior to storage.


Job Description: Client Registrar

Arrival Time: 9:00 AM

Last Client Accepted: Noon

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Log onto Food Bank Manager and open card printer program.

2.  Greet Clients as they enter pantry. Client to provide either a valid ID or a Dunedin Cares ID card. Make sure all Clients entering the pantry are wearing masks!

3.  If Client has Dunedin Cares ID card, scan the card, which will open a new visit record in Food Bank Manager. Enter the Client’s guest number, confirm the number of family members and connect Client with their assigned Shopper. 

4.  If Client does not have a Dunedin Cares ID card but is already in the database, obtain their last name to find their record in Food Bank Manager and create a new visit for this Client. Make an ID card for the Client and test scan the ID card before providing to Client. 

5.  If Client is new, review their ID, set up a new Client record in Food Bank Manager, create a new visit for that day and make a Dunedin Cares ID card. Test scan the ID card before providing to Client.

6.  At the end of the food distribution, enter volunteer hours and donations into Food Bank Manager. Log off Food Bank Manager and close card printer program.

7.  Thoroughly sanitize computer, mouse and general desk area prior to closing out.



Job Description: Shopper

Arrival Time: 9:15 AM

Last Client Accepted: Noon

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  After Client has been registered, Shopper will greet Client and begin shopping.

2.  Shopper will follow Guest Shopping List and floor plan protocols

3.  Shopper will take items from shelves as directed by Client

4.  At all times, Shopper will maintain 6-foot social distance between other Shoppers and Clients.

5.  Shopper stays with Client until checkout, at which time Check Out Valet will empty shopping cart for weighting.

6.  Shopper will move empty shopping cart to Client waiting area. Cart will be sanitized by Shopper, prior to use by the next Client, 

7.  Shopper will sanitize each cart thoroughly at the conclusion of the shopping day.


Job Description: Checkout Recorder

Arrival Time: 9:15 AM

Last Client: 12:30/1:00 PM

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Client will present single-use number to Checkout Recorder to match the Client to the open visit record in Food Bank Manager.

2.  Tally weight of Client’s goods and record total in Food Bank Manager and close out Client’s visit.

3.  Provide Client with a “Next Visit Card” with a date 30 days from current visit.

4.  Mark all Client records as “Complete” before logging off Food Bank Manager.

5.  Thoroughly sanitize computer, mouse, scale and general desk area before leaving.


Job Description: Checkout Valet

Arrival Time: 9:15 AM

Last Client: 12:30/1:00 PM

Mask Required

Duties on Food Distribution Day(s):

1.  Unload goods from Client’s shopping cart onto checkout scale.

2.  Once all good have been weighed and recorded by the Checkout Recorder, load goods into wagon. Client should not handle the goods.

3.  Bring goods to Client’s car and assist with loading, if necessary.

4.  Return the wagon to checkout area for next Client.

5.  At conclusion of food distribution, empty meat coolers and return items to freezer.

6.  Thoroughly sanitize empty meat coolers and leave open until next use.


Job Description: Warehouse Receiving/Processing/Shelving  (“Stocker”)

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday: 9:30 am – 12 Noon

Wednesday Afternoons: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Mask Required

1.  Stocker will assist with the transport of donated items from the pantry loading dock onto warehouse scale.

2.  Stocker will document the donation date, donor’s name and total weight of the donation on the appropriate clipboard (individual or group donation).

3.  Stocker will review and verify all ‘expiration’ or ‘use by ‘ dates on all donations. Stocker can review information posted in pantry for dating guidelines.

4.  Stocker will mark donated items with a vertical line through product barcodes to prevent any returns to stores.

5.  Stocker will restock Warehouse and pantry shelves, as product is required.

6.  Stocker will break down all boxes so they can be taken to recycling center.

7.  Stocker will empty all trashcans in the warehouse and pantry and take to outdoor trash bin.

8.  Any donations not processed prior to Stocker leaving, should be weighed and recorded and left in bins under the tables. 

9.  Stocker will leave the warehouse area clean and tables sanitized prior to leaving.

10. Stockers should enter their volunteer hours into the Time Log.

11. If all of the above duties are completed and time allows, Stocker(s) may:

  • a.   Organize shelves in the warehouse and pantry
  • b.   Rotate stock on shelves and in freezers
  • c.  Identify items which have low inventory
  • d.  Break down large bags of dog food into smaller bags for distribution
  • e.  General organization of warehouse and pantry as needed.
